Description
When Montana was admitted to the Union in 1889, the Omnibus Enabling Act called for sections 16 and 36 of every township to be reserved for support of common schools. This Montana grant comprised some five million acres. Nearly 90% remains with the state today. These lands are “held in trust for the people”. An annual sum of almost $57 million was raised in 2023 to fund public education.
73.8% of Montana schools are considered rural. Our own children received their learner’s permits in 8th grade and ultimately drove over 43,000 miles each to receive their high school diplomas – 60 miles round trip every day – 180 days per year. Montanans have made an incredible commitment to and innumerable sacrifices for the education of their children since territorial founding. It has long been understood the school is the heart of our community. It is the glue that holds us together, the time capsule of our identity, and the hope for our future.
